About Image

Our history

Sawmill Fehrenbacher was founded in the early 20th century — in the heart of the Black Forest, where wood has always been a defining raw material. What began as a small family business has developed over five generations into a modern company with state-of-the-art technology and products of outstanding quality.

1913:

The Fehrenbacher sawmill is founded.

1920:

Wilhelm Fehrenbacher takes over in the second generation and acquires a water-powered frame saw.

1959:

In the third generation, Eugen Fehrenbacher takes over the sawmill. He invests in a new saw hall with a new frame saw and an edger. In addition, he expands the log yard and invests in a sorting trolley.

1994:

In the fourth generation, Martin Fehrenbacher takes over and shifts the business focus from construction timber to quality timber. Over the following years, he modernises and expands the site, investing in new frame saws, edgers, sorting systems and drying kilns, as well as a wood chip heating system, vacuum destacking robot and sorting boxes with a stacking machine.

seit 2023:

Elias Fehrenbacher has been part of the management team in the fifth generation. Together, Martin and Elias Fehrenbacher have invested in a new resaw and expanded the company premises.

our top features

From tree to product

Our timber passes through a series of carefully coordinated steps — from the forest to the finished product.

The journey of our timber begins in local forests. Together with the responsible forest rangers, we take over the logs directly on site. An initial quality grading takes place before the logs are transported by truck to the sawmill.

Sorting & preparation

At the log yard, each log is sorted by species, diameter and quality using a sorting trolley. The logs are then transferred via cross conveyors to our sawing hall.

Sawing

For sawing, we use state-of-the-art frame saw and circular saw technology. This allows the logs to be cut precisely into rift and semi-rift boards — a process that ensures high stability and dimensional accuracy.

Sorting & drying

After sawing, a further quality grading takes place. Depending on the grade, each board is transported to the corresponding sorting box, automatically stacked and kiln-dried to a technical moisture content of approx. 12%. Our drying kilns are sustainably heated using our wood chip heating system.

Packaging & shipping

Once dried, the timber is destacked by a vacuum destacking robot, packaged and temporarily stored in our warehouse. From there, it is loaded by forklift and shipped throughout Europe — on schedule and safely to our customers.
